When I was about 15, I was sitting in a restaurant having supper with my family and suddenly felt my heart start pounding. I couldn’t breathe. I thought I was about to die. It was horrible, it was scary, and that was only the first of many anxiety attacks to come. They came without warning, and now they are just a memory. However in hindsight I know that they were a result of buried stress, and fear. Unresolved stress can to show up in many ways, not many pleasant. If you ever find yourself worrying, caught up in trying to control the outcome of something, concerned with what people are thinking, or suffering with anxiety, there is one root emotion behind it all. Fear. Fear can be ugly, unwanted, clingy, and controlling. Facing it, conquering it, is very possible, difficult, and very freeing. It is by far the best thing you can do for yourself and the people you love. There are 3 really important elements you have to battle fear.
The Bible mentions trust a whopping 147 times. Why? What does that mean? Trust what? Proverbs 3:5-6 ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him and he will make your paths straight.’ This one is quoted often, and one part that sticks out to me is ‘Lean not on your own understanding.’ Can you remember the last time you had it all figured out? Knew everything? I can’t. There are always unknowns. That could be scary, or it could be wonderful, because it’s not our weight to carry. It’s impossible. Trusting means letting it go. There is no way you will have it all figured out, or all under control all the time. And that is perfectly okay. Believe in the greater good, that there is something to learn and gain from any and all circumstances. Trust also, that you will be okay, no matter what.
Faith appears in the Bible 458 times! Faith is power unlike no other. It is true freedom. Matthew 17:20 “He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” This may sound impossible, a little far fetched, but it reveals the power of the mind. Whatever you set your heart and mind on, it will come to be. What have you been setting your mind on? Negative thoughts will bring negative results. But if you believe all things are possible, so they will be. Once I started having faith, stress started melting away. Worry no longer plagued me. It was amazing to watch circumstances unfold and turn into something good, every time.
And finally truth. Behind a lot of fear is deception. Projecting past onto future, or future into present. It begins with a tiny lie. Maybe you were told you you are worthless, and now without realizing it, you walk around thinking that everyone sees you as worthless. Maybe somebody said fat is ugly and you now that you gained a few pounds you walk around feeling ugly. But in both of those examples, you bought a lie. You will be able to find the lie in your reaction to circumstances. If you are feeling hurt about something, your emotions are telling you something is wrong. It’s time to recognize those lies, and replace them with truth. If you feel ugly, write ‘beautiful’ on your mirror. If you say ugly every time you see yourself, say beautiful too. Be in the present. Forget the what ifs, the was, and focus on now. What is right in front of you. It’s time to battle for the truth, and that means replacing and fighting every thought that is weighing you down. It also means recognizing your value, and believing it.
Truth is the doorway to freedom. Trust is the key. Faith is the heart that takes you there. You deserve to know freedom. Don’t ever let fear make you think you are trapped, it’s time to face it and fight for your life. Rewrite your story.
